FSP Mourns the Loss of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee
Washington, D.C.–The Financial Services Professionals organization released the following press release on the passing of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas:
Financial Services Professionals (FSP) joins the Congressional community, former staff, and family of Congresswoman Jackson Lee in mourning her passing.
“The FSP organization while saddened at the loss of one of Congress’ foremost fighters for justice and keepers of the flame of liberty, we celebrate a woman who epitomized the “can-do” spirit of America, knocked down barriers, and held those in power, no matter the party affiliation or background, to account. The Honorable Sheila Jackson Lee was a trailblazer and never predictable When it came to a fork in the road, when many Yale classmates chose gilded capitals of Europe to study abroad, Sheila Jackson Lee made her way to West Africa to study in Nigeria. The Congresswoman’s time in Nigeria would later inform her work on the prestigious House Foreign Affairs Committee where she engaged on the toughest conflicts, ranging from South African reconciliation, the Middle East and North Africa, to South East Asia, where she championed the plight of the Korean Comfort Women while acknowledging the brutality of the bombs dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. One area where Rep. Jackson Lee was particularly engaged, was Pakistan, where serving as Chair of the Pakistan Caucus, she fought to help aggrieved women and children with a deep appreciation of the nuance and complexities of the South Asian nation.
No domestic issue escaped Rep. Jackson Lee’s 24-hour policy vigilance. Her diligence in working to get the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act passed was unmatched. She also stepped into the gap to ensure that H.R. 40 had its day in the House Judiciary Committee after Congressman John Conyers’ retirement, finally getting it through committee. The Congresswoman was especially proud of her work and contributions to the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and helped ensure its passage by reaching across the aisle. Hailing from a Houston Congressional district, the Congresswoman also listened and regularly engaged with the energy, oil and gas sectors, understanding that these industries were the lynchpin to the Texas economy, but she never waivered in holding these big businesses accountable when necessary.
