Washington, D.C., — Financial Services Professionals (FSP) released the following statement on the appointment of Ms. Laphonza Butler as California’s next senator:
“Financial Services Professionals (FSP) salutes the historic appointment of Ms. Laphonza Butler to serve out the term of the late Senator Dianne Feinstein. Senator Butler’s appointment by California Governor Gavin Newsom immediately enhances the diversity of a body that had no representation from Black women. She is the third Black woman to serve in the history of the U.S. Senate and is the second openly gay woman in the Senate. Senator Butler brings a wealth of experience, most recently as head of Emily’s List, a political action committee that helps elect Democratic women. Previously, she led SEIU Local 2015, the largest union representing nursing and home health care workers. We look forward to Senator Butler adding her voice to the important policy debates in Congress that impact our community, our nation, and our world.”
